ART OR CRAFT?

Last class we covered some basic differences between ART and CRAFT. A common conclusion was that craft serves a functional purpose, while art is something that we admire/makes us think. Both art and craft have many things in common. You need to be skilled to be able to create either, and you do need to apply quite a bit of time and passion to both. Art is not better than craft, or the other way around.

The picture below is a portrait made out of thread, using stitching, a traditional craft technique.

Is this art, or craft? Why do you think the artist decided to use stitching instead of paint? Explain your answer.

This is art because it is an awesome imagination to do an art with stitching. It is very different than most art which is painting or drawing. There is no functional purpose so this piece is artt.

I believe this picture is art because, craft serve a functional purpose, and art is something that we admire. I believe that this can usually only be used to make us think or be admired by an audience. The artist decided to use stitching instead of paint because it is to show how different he is.

I think that it is craft because the artist used stitches to make this piece.

I think that the reason the artist used stitching instead of painting is because he wants his art to be more original, because painting faces is pretty common. So instead, he used stitching which is uncommon. Also stitching something into a face is way more unique than painiting a face.

I think this is art because this is just a protrait and it doesnt serve any functional purpose. The artist decided to use sitching because it can really define someones face .

I think it is art because this portrait has no conceivable purpose. as for why the artist chose to use stitching, I think it was to make a potrait using an unsual method, therefore making it more unique.

This is art you can see by the stitching

I think it is art because it has so much detail and teaches you the true meaning about art

I think it is a craft because even though it is a portrait of great detail of a person, it was sewn and in my opinion, that makes it a craft. It's true it makes you think, but like designs and pictures on clothing or cloth that the natives used, it is considered a craft, and therefore, I think it is a craft.

I think this is art because art does not have a functional purpose and this does not have a functional purpose. The artist probably used threads because it is to be more creative and different.

I think it is both art and craft beacuse it uses stitching, which is a crafting technique, but we can also admire it.

Pardon my late comment!
This piece follows the characteristics of art. It is a portrait that appears to be stitched onto a canvas - which could make it seem as though this piece falls into the category as "craft". A craft is something with a function and a particular purpose. Art is about aesthetics rather than functions. Therefore, this portrait made by Daniel Kornrumf is art.

This protrait does not have any uses, so I think it can be considered as art. I think the artist decided to use stitchings because he/she is better at sewing than using pencil or paint. He/she could have used stitchings because they wanted to make a unique portrait and express their love for art and sewing.

I think this is art art because art is something you can not use and craft is something you can use.
This portrait is something that you can not use.
I think why he decied to stich and not paint because it can be unique and people would wanted. Stiching is neater and makes no mess but paint is neat sometimes and makes alot of mess.It also attracts people eyes.

I believe that this is art because he spent time making it beautiful for others to look at, admire and love. When I think of a function I think of some sort of tool, and this is definitely not a tool! He didn't make it for others to use, or with a functional purpose so it couldn't be a craft.

I think this is a craft and art cause the artist used stitching to create a potrait of someone. its art cause you can see the artistic value i also think its a craft cause of its stiching for all we no it could be a sign meaning it has a functional purpose.

I think this is an art and a craft because it was made from cloth, which has a use while it is also art because the cloth is a picture, which doesn't have much use. I believe the artist/crafter used stitching as a method of showing a higher level of dexterity and skill involved in the creation.

In your post we established that "a common conclusion was that craft serves a functional purpose, while art is something that we admire/makes us think." So, I think that this is art because we can not use it and it has no functional purpose, but we can admire it. I think the artist decided to stitch it because he wanted to be original or maybe he didn't like to paint

I think that art is something that you look at and make yourself feel good lookind at and craft is something that you make and use like a clay cup.

Personally, I think it is both art and craft; but I would be leaning more to the "art" side because it is something admirable and attractive, more than it serves as just a piece of fabric.

This is definitely art, not craft. This is a picture and it cant be used, just admired. I think the artist stitched it to make it an original piece of art.

I believe this is art because this piece doesn't serve a purpose, its a portrait which can't be used in any way to help serve a purpose.

I think that this is craft because if it wasn't craft, you can see that it was drawn by pencil or was painted, but this was stitching.

It is art in my perspective because it has a unique texture. The texture makes the portrait original. Stitching a portrait is a very new and one of a kind portrait.

To me, this picture is considered art and craft. I think that it is craft because the artist used threads and stitching to make it. I think it is art because art is anything that is made with your imagination to express your feelings and emotion. I think that the artist used stitching instead of paint because paint is used a lot in the history of art, but threads? Not many artists use it, but this one however, used it and made this art special and unique.

In my opinion i think this is art because it can only be admired. This art master piece must have took a long time because its so detailed plus it stitched, not drawn, not painted or anything else. Something with that much detail must be very fragile. So you can not use it in plays.

I think that this is art because craft has a use like clay cups and bracelettes. Their used to drink from or to wear. Art is mostly displayed in museums, in parents bedrooms and the refrigrater. They are admired and sometimes represent things.

I think this is art because I don't think anybody could use it so it probably is art. Though it is stitching, it is not a craft, I think the artist just wanted his/her portrait to stand out so he/she used stitching.

I believe this is not craft because it doesn't really have a purpose to daily use such as pottery does, but it is art because we can admire and look at it.

In my opinion, I think that this is art because you can admire it, it makes you think and mainly because it has no functional purpose. I think that the artist decided to use stitching because he wanted it to be unique and original. If he used paint, it would be like any other piece of art and it wouldn’t be special.

To me, I think this is a work of craft and art. Craft serves a functional purpose. This portrait can be hung on a wall, or be a piece in a museum. The artist also used a traditional craft method to create the portrait. Art is something we admire or make us think. This portrait could be a portrait of himself; he can admire himself, or it could be someone else who he admires. It does make us think. It makes me think who the person is and why does he have such big glasses. He was skilled to be able to create either, plus it looked like he applied a lot of time and passion to the portrait. I think he decided to use stitching instead of paint because he wanted to create texture and boldness. He also wanted to be original.

For many people don’t have a clear conception of what art is and what a craft is. The difference could be involved with how it is produced or the aesthetic or artistic appearance of the product. None the less it doesn’t have much to do with those factors but is more focused on these. For one Ms. Badescu, craft work is more associated to history and how items were invented throughout it, to serve a functional purpose. In other words it operates for the benefits of us. Art work on the other hand is a portrayal that can represent a diversity of things, from reality to fantasies and ultimately everything. I think since this piece of work is made of cloth it could be considered a craft however the main intent of it was to represent a face. The artist might of use a cloth however do you think anyone is going to use it as a blanket. Therefore I think using these facts I can presume that this more of piece of an art then a craft. Even though art and crafts might be a bit different, they are both the result of the application of human intelligence. That is what I think the difference is between art and craft and what I think the picture is.

In my opinion, I think this is an example of art. The reason why i think this is art is because even though the artist chose to use craft like objects it is most likely it was not intended to be actually used by a living thing. The reason why i think he used thread and other items in that matter is because he probably wanted to show the people that almost anything can be art from a canvas and paint to even fabric and thread. therefore I think this piece of work is art.

I think its a little bit of both because art and craft are both based on creativity and uniqueness. I think they chose to stitch it because paint is often used and they wanted to do something different .

I believe this piece is art, because it does not have a functional purpose which would support our classification for craft. I think the artist used stitching to create this portrait because it gives a unique texture- or, at least one that is different than paint, which is used much more frequently in my opinion.

I think this is art because it's a picture of someone, even though it's made out of pencil shavings. A craft has a functional purpose but this clearly doesn't therefore it is art.
