Hi y'all,
There will be a quiz in the near future that will cover the historical/context/visual aspects of modern street graffiti.
Here is the information you will be required to know:
Historical
Garffiti came about in the late 1960s, early 1970s and it originated in Philadelphia and New York.
Social Context
Graffiti is a form of rebellion. At the time when it started, it was done as a response to the lack of opportunity racial minorities faced in the United States.
This has grown to incorporate other forms of expression such as break dancing and hip hop (at that time MC-ing). These, along with graffiti were done at block parties.
Positive graffiti is usually done by skilled "writers" and has a positive message. Negative graffiti is usually sloppy and is related to tagging property for the purpose of spreading a gang's message.
Both forms of graffiti, if done on public or private property without obtaining permission are considered illegal and consequences involve large fines ($).
How can you identify graffiti?
-letters are overlapped, squished, stylized such that text is changed into an image
-the colours are consistent, most letters will follow the same colour structure
-there is at least one outline surrounding the graffiti and oftentimes the letters have perspective by adding the 3D outline
-more often than not, there are textures or highlights on the letters
-most good graffiti has a background, or additional elements such as stars, clouds, bubbles, arrows or paint splashes
C'est tout! Please come talk to me, or post a comment if you have any questions.

We can still post. It's slightly easier too. Keep everything the same, just make sure you select "anonymous" from the drop down menu.
