"Your parents have been recently contacted by a graffiti artist to have a mural created on one of the outside walls of their garage. Both you and your parents have seen the plans for the mural art and think it would look amazing. You all agree and the following week, the mural gets completed. It's colourful, it's bright and it stirs up conversation among the passerbyers.

All is good and dandy, until six of your neighbours knock on your door and complain that the graffiti mural piece is terrible for the neighbourhood. They ask you and you parents to paint over it, because they are afraid that gangs and drug dealers will start moving into the neighbourhood. You have known these neighbours since you were small, and many are your parents' friends."

Since you have some background in graffiti history, what advice would you give your parents? What should they do: paint over the mural and make peace with the neighbours, OR keep the graffiti mural and suffer the consequences of angry neighbours? What would be your choice? And what do you think would be the best solution to this situation?

I would keep the mural on the garage door, because graffiti doesn't have to mean gangs, drug dealers and bad people. It could mean fighting for peace or for rights. Graffiti could also mean trying to express your emotions or your feelings. Graffiti doesn't have to necessarily deal with crime stuff/people. Graffiti might not drive gangs and etc. into the neighbourhood, so I feel that the neighbours and etc. shouldn't worry about gangs and tc. coming into the neighbourhood.

I would tell my parents to have a talk with all the disatisfied neighbours regarding the problem. If their only complaint is that they're worried that drug dealers and gangs will come into the neighbourhood, then it isn't such a big problem. I would explain that the graffiti we had done isn't like tagging, but rather an art form, a method of expression. My parents and I have agreed on the design so it's not something derogatory or vulgar. It's also on private property and kept there which means it was done on purpose and not by some gang. Worst case scenario is if gangs actually do come, we could call in the police before things get too out of hand.
I'm sure we could convince our neighbours that we've known for so long that the graffiti we have isn't a negative influence on the neighbourhood.

I would actually keep the mural on the garage door because graffiti doesn't always have to deal with gangs and violence. Graffiti is also a way for people to show their feelings and to show what they think of some things too. I would show my neighbours different graffiti designs and hopefully they know that graffiti isn't always a bad thing. I can also show them some of the work students and school are doing so that the neighbours can get an idea that graffiti isn't always a bad thing. With some of these reasons, the neighbours should understand that graffiti isn't always a bad thing and that even students at school are learning and experiencing the graffiti art.

I would keep the mural because graffiti is a form of art and shouldn't be associated just with gangs and violence. Since it is not "tagging" done by gang members, there is really no need for the neighbours to complain. I highly doubt that a good neighbourhood that has been peaceful with no violence would see any increase of violence just because of a painting. You should respect the artist's time and effort by leaving it on. Also graffiti was first created to sort of symbolize freedom of speech and you're neighbours should respect that and understand it.

You could also try to tell them about the history of graffiti and how people used it(as freedom of speech and a way to express themselves.) It's also not even an eyesore so there is no reason to want to take it down. There are police you can call if you see anything suspicious, so unless your neighbourhood is already violent, chances are anything suspicious would be reported by the neighbours in a tight neighbourhood like yours. It's also something special that passerby can look at, so it might provoke other people's discussions involving art and graffiti. Also property value of your house or maybe even others in the neighbourhood may go up because some people might really like the painting which adds a bonus to your house or neighbourhood. Also gangs can't come on private property so it wouldn't attract violence. If all else fails I would give a probation or trial and say that if there is no gang violence caused by the graffiti in the next few weeks or months we will not have to remove it and make an agreement with the neighbours.

If my neighbours have a problem with it due to the fact they think it will draw gangs and other gang-related business to the area, it will be a simple feat to explain the difference between tagging and the graffiti on your garage door. By the neighbours refusing to let us keep the graffiti over something that will probably never affect them is going against our freedom of expression in which they have absolutey no say.
