Hi grade 8s,

Please post a response in the "comment" section for this post. Use ONLY YOUR FIRST NAME and home form. After typing in your response, click on the "anonymous" bullet, then click on publish. DUE THURSDAY, JUNE 17 at 6 pm sharp.
"Your parents have been recently contacted by a graffiti artist to have a mural created on one of the outside walls of their garage. Both you and your parents have seen the plans for the mural art and think it would look amazing. You all agree and the following week, the mural gets completed. It's colourful, it's bright and it stirs up conversation among the passerbyers.
All is good and dandy, until six of your neighbours knock on your door and complain that the graffiti mural piece is terrible for the neighbourhood. They ask you and you parents to paint over it, because they are afraid that gangs and drug dealers will start moving into the neighbourhood. You have known these neighbours since you were small, and many are your parents' friends."
Since you have some background in graffiti history, what advice would you give your parents? What should they do: paint over the mural and make peace with the neighbours, OR keep the graffiti mural and suffer the consequences of angry neighbours? What would be your choice? And what do you think would be the best solution to this situation?

i would tell my parent to keep it on the garage door beacuse it doesn't have to mean bad people and gangs. it could also be tell the peoples enotions or my feelings. graffit might not drive gangs and etc. into the neighbourhood, so i feel that the neighbours and etc. shouldn't worry about gangs coming into the neighbourhood.
I'm sure we could convince our neighbours that we've known for so long that the graffiti we have isn't a negative influence on the neighbourhood.

You could also try to tell them about the history of graffiti and how people used it(as freedom of speech and a way to express themselves.) It's also not even an eyesore so there is no reason to want to take it down. There are police you can call if you see anything suspicious, so unless your neighbourhood is already violent, chances are anything suspicious would be reported by the neighbours in a tight neighbourhood like yours. It's also something special that passerby can look at, so it might provoke other people's discussions involving art and graffiti. Also property value of your house or maybe even others in the neighbourhood may go up because some people might really like the painting which adds a bonus to your house or neighbourhood. Also gangs can't come on private property so it wouldn't attract violence. If all else fails I would give a probation or trial and say that if there is no gang violence caused by the graffiti in the next few weeks or months we will not have to remove it and make an agreement with the neighbours.
