ART OR CRAFT?

Last class we covered some basic differences between ART and CRAFT. A common conclusion was that craft serves a functional purpose, while art is something that we admire/makes us think. Both art and craft have many things in common. You need to be skilled to be able to create either, and you do need to apply quite a bit of time and passion to both. Art is not better than craft, or the other way around.

The picture below is a portrait made out of thread, using stitching, a traditional craft technique.

Is this art, or craft? Why do you think the artist decided to use stitching instead of paint? Explain your answer.

I think the artist may have chosen to use stitchings because they thought it would be a great way to show off their crafting skills and also turning it into a piece of art. This piece does not have a functional purpose to it, therefore it is Art.

In my opinion it is both art and craft, since the artist stitched it it becomes cloth which has a functional service, yet the picture that was stitched was art because it has no functional service.I think the artist used stitching instead of paint because it now has a use, the cloth has many useful purposes yet a painting is just hung on a wall to be looked at. With his technique it is both useful and eye catching

The artist stitched because he/she probably started out with crafting in mind but his/her piece had no functional purpose therefore it's art, even if stitching is a traditional craft technique.

I think that this is art. A portrait has no functional purpose. It is just there to look at and admire. You see, mostly portraits are painted or sketched. The artist used stitches to make it look more unique, and to set it apart from any other portrait. I think that this painting is very interesting to look at.

I think this is both art and craft because, since this is stitched it is as cloth ,so it can be worn; or can be displayed as a portrait for viewers to enjoy.
LIKE The pencil sharpener shavings piece this serves the same meaning: The artist wanted to show off his skills. it makes it unique from the others.

I personally think this is art because as you said, craft serves a functional purpose, and portraits don't serve a functional purpose. Also, this picture serves the purpose of art quite well because it made me think. This is why I believe that this picture is considered art and not craft.

I think the artist decided to stitch out the portrait instead of painting it because it makes the picture much more unique. This shows how things used to create crafts such as thread, can also be used to create a piece of art.

If this is stiched up to be a towel design on the towel, since a towel has a functional purpose and also there is a art design on it , then it would be a art and a craft.

I definitely think that this portrait is art and not craft. Although it's made of threads(and threads do serve a functional purpose) using stitchings it's still not craft because the artist used the threads simply as a material for the portrait! since its a portrait it has no functional purpose so therefor it is art!

I think that the artist used threads instead of just paint because he wanted to be a little more creative(just like the artist who used pencil shavings)and he wanted his artwork to be unique and different than others! I personally really like this portrait because it gives us something more interesting to look at.

I think it's both art and craft because it require imagination and talents to create art (in this case, it's the portrait which require creativity), and it need skill and knowledge to be craft (in this case, it's the stitching which is a skill).

I think the artist use stitching because it's their art, and they either want to try stitching or that he or she is good at it. For example, for the previous piece of art (the one made with pencil shaving), he use that medium because it's his piece so he had the freedom to do or use whatever he want.

From my opinion, this is both art and craft. As you said in class, craft serves a functional purpose, while art lets people admire. Therefore, when the artist uses stitches it can be used at a cloth AND to be looked at like a painting. This technique is both useful and to be admired.

I think that this is both art and craft.Firstly, the artist stiched the piece of art which makes it in to a piece of cloth, so it has a functional pupose to it so it's a craft.Secondly, you can just look at it and admire how welldone this piece is.Also, it's unique unlike other pieces that uses paint or any other matirial.

This is art. Simply because, even though the artist has used a medium generally utilized in crafts, the portrait serves no purpose.

What are you going to use the portrait for? As a bookmark? A tablecloth? It is just there to look at, and therefore has no funtional purpose, which is the differential trait that seperates art from crafts.

I think that the portrait is both.
I personally think that the artist/crafter made the portrait from the traditional techinique``sewing``to make this portait ,is to show us that even though craft and art is different in many ways.It doesnt mean that it cant be shown in one peice of art or craft.Or the artist on purposely used fabric and thread to make a portrait is to tell us, in art, there are many techniques, since there are numerous techniques that can be shown,it can be easily mistaken as craft very easily such as the portrait itself;the artist is telling us that since we have our own mind, marjority of the population may have thought that art and craft is one thing or the other way around,so the artist is to prove that it could be either one if you think it is or if you think its not.

I think the artist used thread because, maybe he/she felt better, or more confedent, using threads, or maybe he/she just wanted to be different, or, as I metioned above, use it as a blanket or some other form of craft. Some examples of craft this piece could be used for are, a blanket, a cape/scarf, a rug, or a pillowcase.

but the most orthodox materials are like paint, pastel, paper, pencil, and etc.

Using stiching is a great way of portraying the face ; furthermore, I believe the is in fact art, but not a craft .
Yes it's used out of materials that can definitely make something functional, but in this case it does not serve a functional purpose.
Thus, this fabulous piece is a craft.

I think craft and art are 2 different types of work done by an artist. Art is done by the imagination of the artist and being presented visually for others, craft is done by skilled people who presents it for a purpose of using like decorations or a cup to drink from. To me , this portrait is an art work instead of a craft work , even if the artist did use stitching , it's still a portrait that can only be visualized , and not used for other purpose. I think the artist was trying to make this piece of art more interesting by using stitching.

This stitching portrait is art, and there is basically no arguement to this. Like Ms Badescu said, art is something we see and admire, while craft serves a functional purpose. This portrait has no functional purpose, unless the artist wants to use the stitching portrait as a washcloth. That's unlikely, and because nobody would want to damage such a beautiful portrait as this, it is something we see and do not use. Therefore, this is art.

The way to differentiate art and craft should be based one idea. Most people think that art is something that looks good and are put in museums and craft as being the creation of objects that have a purpose. But a piece of craft can look nice too so what is what?

To me, art has some deeper layer of meaning that has been put into the piece. Also the purposes for these two terms are different. Art is used to show and express the artist's opinion where as craft is used as a decoration or tool.

Craft is simple and explicit. You could know exactly what it is meant to be. Art has many faces to it. And different people have different perspectives of the piece.

If you look at the picture captured through canvas and stitches, can you really tell what the artist was thinking when they decided to do it? No. Is it their loved one, or maybe a lost sibling? This is art. Art is what you want it to be and has a million meanings.

I think this portrait is both art and craft. I believe craft is the hobby for creating items, while art is a way to freely express yourself. I think the artist used stitching, a traditional craft technique, instead of paint because they enjoy crafting, and it's a special way to express themselves in art. Also, the design can now serve a functional purpose, for example, a decorative blanket. It's art because it pleases the senses and can make us think/be admired. Therefore, this picture is craft as well as art.

I believe that this unique potrait is not only art but is a lso craft because it uses imagination and requires using your hands (skills). In my opinion, art is a picture which we draw, colour and show a messege or even imagine while craft is something unique which requires using your skills and thinking out of the pencil case for some time.

This artist did just not only stitch for the sake of it to look better and more creative, but he stiched to make a combination of both art and craft. First he designed a picture in his head and then made his way stitching it.

There are many possibilities to this question because many people think of art differently. Some say, it is art. Some say it is craft and some say it is both. Mabye the artist wanted to take a challenge and do something not many people did in the past.
In this case he used imagination, skills and most importantly his style.

This obviously does not serve a functional purpose, but is something nice to look at. This means that it is definitely art. I think that artists should always think about what texture they would like to give to the picture, what feelings they might want an observer to feel when viewing their work of art. I would expect that the artist of this needlework wanted the viewer to feel that this piece is completely different than other portraits and that the man in the picture has depth and emotion in him and is not just a flat piece of paper. That is why I think the artist chose needlework.

I think this portrait is art, not craft. Craft has a functional purpose. For example, people can make clay pots. The pot has a functional purpose, unless only used for display as art. I'm not sure what way he wanted to express this portrait though.

I think that this is art because although it does look nice, it has no functional purpose. For example, a cup made from clay can be used for drinking, therefore it does have a functional purpose. However, this thing cannot be used in life other than to be admired.

I think that the artist decided to use stitching instead of paint because he wanted it to be original and unique than other pieces of art, and because it's harder to stitch this design than it is to paint. So therefore, it shows that he has put a lot of effort into this piece of art, and he has shown that he has a talent of being able to stitch this piece of art.

It’s a portrait, which makes it art.
It actually depends. If it is just standing on the wall or in some art protector, it is just art.
But, if they made it into a pillowcase or something, it is also a craft. A craft has an actual purpose. Then the artist stitched it to make it useable. (You can’t have a paper pillowcase. It’s just too uncomfortable.)
If it is only art, the artist may have used stitching as a change to make it original.

I think that it is neither art nor craft-but the fruit of both. The portrait is an art, but because it was stitched, it also serves a purpose as a craft. But in some ways, I think it is more of an art than a craft-because you don't really have much use for a hand stitched portrait other than displaying it. Also in one of Picasso's paintings he glued (I think) a basket, and that is considered and art.

I think this is art, and craft.
Why? Because someone used time and materials to create this, people admire it, and by stitching, this incoprated all these attributes of art, and craft into this portrait.
By using stitching, this is considered craft. The person who stitched this probably had to make a rough copy, which took time and patience. I'm pretty sure he did'nt just decide to stitch something out without planning it out first. So this is art, because he had to draw and figure out the colours for this portrait. This is art and craft because of that. I think he decided to stitch it, because painting it would make it like other portraits, but stitching it would make it craft and art.
