That's a pretty loaded question to start off with. Let's see...can you provide a definition without getting help from a dictionary or the web? Give it a try in the comments section.
To gather your creative juices, I've posted an image featuring the work of Kyle Bean, an extremely talented British contemporary artist whose work is very detailed and precise.
Can you guess what the picture is made out of? What materials did he use?

I feel that the image is indeed art, because even though the artist was using an unconventional medium, he is creating something... beautiful and original, I'd say, as, personally, I had never seen something like this before.

Sorry for the double post.
Yes, I think this is art, there must have been a reason the artist has done this with pencil shavings. Although it may seem easy, the imagination behind it is extraordinary.
Mandy Y, 8H
I think this is art because the artist has created something that he has thought of in his mind and wants everyone to see what he sees and that to me is art.

Art is Life.
Is This Art?
This is art because it is an interpretation of a portrait that was made out of a more non-traditional medium and that was pencil shavings. Since this piece is a portrait of a person, it would be considered a traditional piece. But at the same time, the medium used makes it to be considered as a non-traditional piece. So I think that this selection would be hovering in between traditional and non-traditional art.

This picture is definitely art, because the artist got creative and decided to make a portrait with pencil shavings. And if you look closely, the person in the portrait is smiling, which kind of tells us that the artist was happy when he made this and he connected his feeling to everyone else through his piece of art.

Art is a form of expression coming from our heart/soul and without it there would be no imagination in the world. So being that said, I think art is very important.

Well, in my opinion, anyhting really. Art can be made from the simplist mistakes that we make like spilling paint on the floor. Art doesnt HAVE to be sketches, or paintings. It can be like that portrait above, made of pencil shavings.Art's usually inspired by somehting or someone. It expresses feelings thoughts or emotions through visual sculptures, images, and films. Art can be made of many things. for example, paints, pencils, or just household items! Amazing eh? Art can be found everywhere. In homes, on streets, books, websites, classrooms and more. Art just makes everything more interesting. Without it, our world would be boring and dull. There would be no buildings, no clothes, no nothing. Therefore, art isnt just paintings, art is life! :)

This is photo is definitely art due to the fact that someone that someone used their imagination to make this portrait out of pencil shavings. The artist was getting creative using different types of materiel and ideas. He is creating something beautiful and original, I'd say, personally, I had never seen something like this before. This is a true piece of Art.

If its mostly blue then maybe the artist was sad or unhappy at the time he/she created it.
Yes, this is art because, in my description of art above, I said that it's expressing ones true thoughts or feelings, and in this portait the artist seamed to be happy creating the art. (And maybe smiling because it was fun to do too)

No matter of age, no matter of how well you are , just the way you do is art. There is no such thing as a terrible piece of art, because "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
What is art? Art is imagination, creativity, dreams ,art is everything you ever dreamt of. art is all around us, around our world; where ever you sight, there will and always be art.

Art pieces as such can be very inspiring to others. It teaches me you can do art with even the smallest or worthless piece of trash, and still will look as valuable, as any other piece of art in the museum.

As for this portrait, I think it's amazing how simple it is. I tried it myself and it was easy (Sadly, I accidentally knocked it to the floor and Mom vacummed it away!). Yes this is art, because it is...just that. It's art. I can't describe it.
Rathees B, 8D
In my opinion, I think the image is art, because although the material he used is non-traditional, he used it in a traditional way which makes the person who is watching it think that the image is a very unique and beautiful work of art.

Art is... How can I put this without sounding cliché?
Art is art. You can see it, if not then you can feel it, if not that then you can taste it, or maybe you can imagin it? Art goes as far as the burnt cakes I'v had to throw away countless times. I'v been told they where awefull (thank you family), but that's ok because that's what art is. No art goes without being criticized. Art is also the wind blowing a girls hair to the side, even if the moment lasts for a nano second. It's still art, I mean, who said art was permanent?
Everything and anything in this whole intire universe is art.
Based on what I'v written, I think I'v no need to answer the second question, but I will.
Is this Art?
I take it this isn't a yes or no question.
The art made out of pencil shavings has been created. If today we didn't have it on this blog for everyone to see, actually if no one in the world had lain eyes on it, even maybe the artist himself, then it would still be art, because I like I said, art is art, and EVERYTHING is art.
Sorry for the some-what long answer.
Zanib.S 8H
The portrait of the man is art. The artist applied creativity, inspiration and imagination to this portrait. Though the medium he used is not very traditional, he managed to express himself with it. That is what makes it art. No matter what medium they use, if its traditional or non-traditional, abstract or concrete, art is art.
Sucy K, 8G

After I saw the picture, I felt the image indeed was art, because it's how the artist wanted to see pencil shavings, and rather then letting the viewers judge if it was art, he let his perspective take him to where he wanted to and it ended up with the image above.

Art can be shown using anything, from physical movements to scribbles to musical notes to a tree or a mountain. A garden can be a piece of art. Sure, you can't hang a garden on a wall but it is still art. Art is what you take it to be. Art doesn't always need to be made either, merely found. Constellations for example are just patterns that anyone could make. No one really "makes" constellations, they just find them. They look up in the sky at night and say "Hey,if I made a line to connect this star to that one, and this one to this one, and then this one to those stars it looks like a pig." See that person just found art. They didn't have to play anything, draw anything (with a pencil) or anything like that, they simply connected the stars with imaginary lines to create an image. Same thing with watching clouds. You can say it looks like anything you want to and no one can say your wrong, it's your opinion. Others may not share your opinion but with art that doesn't make your opinion wrong.
And that is art. Art is everywhere. Practically anything can be art. With art there isn't really any right or wrong, there are just opinions, creativity and above all, imagination.

I think that this is not art because anybody can put pencil shavings on a back and white face and trace it

Art is a creation. It can come in a form of a dance, a music piece or even an essay. Art can be used to define your self better. Art can be used to express your emotions. Without art the world would be a desolate place, everything will cease to exsist.
To have a work of art you also need to have another crucial mind piece, conviction. Sometimes you may discard a creation saying it is not a work of art. That’s where conviction comes to play, every creation is art but you need the conviction to accept it as a work of art. For example an artist may do a scribbling on a piece of paper, and you believe it just something stupid he did, not a work of art, but another person realizes that’s a work of art and takes it and in most cases he buys it.
Some I come back to the idea, art is a creation, whether you accept it as a work of art or not it is still ART.
Budvin H, 8C

I think that this is a different way of looking at art and I think it is really cool how this artist chose pieces of paper and pencil shavings to create this masterpiece. I think its really impressive because I certainly wouldn't have thought of doing this, and it shows me a new perspective on art.

I think this piece is art because the artist went beyond his imagination and created something that is so interesting and creative.
Dina L, 8H
I think that art is something that people admire. Something that someone with imagination created to express their point of view. Art can be seen in different points of view, in many different forms. Art is something that when you first see it, you can feel that it is interesting or simply just eye-catching, where you can see the artists imagination put to work.
I think this is art because nobody really thought about using pencil shavings to create a portrait until this person with imagination thought "Hey, i can use pencil shavings to create something that nobody else thought of before!" This person used this idea to express and create something that not every has thought about doing. And i thought it was cool and interesting so i would say that it is art.

I think that the portrait made out of pencil shavings is art beacause art can really be anything. Art is a form of free expression that interoperates how the artist feels about certain subject or how she/he about life itself. Art is something that needs only two skills, imagination and creativity. Art means to be sponaneous and to step outside the box. It means not being perfect because art isn't about being perfect, it's about being YOU and expressing your feelings. When someone creates a masterpiece it is never wrong, ugly or a piece of junk, it is always right, beautiful and a treasure that can be replaced. Art is everything, art is one of life's greatest joys and art is beautiful no matter how it looks.
Is this Art?
Yes because the artist has explored and wandered into a form of art i have never seen (but it was already probably done before). He used his imagination and did this work of art without a canvas, a paintbrust, a piece of paper or a pen. It may of been easy but it's the creativity and the orginality that counts in the end. ;)
